U.S. Department of Commerce Investment to Strengthen Business Infrastructure in Cotulla, Texas

U.S. Representative Henry Cuellar Supports Grant to Promote Job Creation in Rural Region

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Commerce Department's Economic Development Administration (EDA) today announced an $800,000 grant to the city of Cotulla, Texas, to support expansion and rebuilding of the city's water lines, making the city more attractive to businesses and bringing new jobs to the region. The project is expected to create 130 new jobs and generate $3 million in private investment, according to grantee estimates.

"Infrastructure investments are essential to strengthening the long-term economic competitiveness of the United States, especially its rural regions," said U.S. Acting Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development Matt Erskine. "The expansion and improvement of Cotulla's water supply system will spur business activity and expand employment opportunities in both the city of Cotulla and throughout LaSalle County."

"Without reliable access to clean water, rural communities face a barrier to growth," said Congressman Henry Cuellar. "This important federal investment in the city of Cotulla not only responds to an immediate need for improved water infrastructure, but will also carry long-term benefits by creating jobs, getting Texans back to work, and helping our country's economy get back on the right track."

The EDA funds will be used to upgrade the city of Cotulla's water system by installing new distribution lines and appurtenances in the northwest quadrant of the city near Interstate 35. This will allow for new commercial development in this area while maintaining adequate levels of water service elsewhere in the city.
