Our thoughts and prayers are with the people and families so deeply impacted by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.
EDA Regional Offices that serve the impacted areas are working closely with Economic Development Districts (EDDs), federal, state and local officials and other partners to accelerate economic recovery from the disaster.
At EDA, we have a long history of successfully supporting disaster recovery and resiliency efforts. Our role is to help facilitate the timely and effective delivery of federal economic development assistance to support long-term community economic recovery planning and project implementation, redevelopment and resiliency.
EDA is positioned to coordinate regional disaster recovery efforts in partnership with its extensive network of Economic Development Districts (EDDs), University Centers, institutions of higher education and other partners in impacted areas.

When devastating events wreak havoc on lives and communities, EDA has been there to aid those affected by a disaster.
The following success story shows how EDA’s role in helping Louisiana respond to recent flooding has made them more resilient:
Louisiana Flooding
Louisiana endured two devastating floods in 2016. Torrential rains in March and August resulted in rivers reaching historic flood levels throughout the state. 57 of Louisiana’s 64 parishes were impacted, with an estimated combined 26,000 businesses affected, including an estimated $367 million in agriculture losses.

EDA joined federal, state and non-profit partners at the Louisiana Resilient Recovery program’s kick-off meeting this August in Lafayette.
Coordinated by Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards and supported by FEMA and the National Disaster Recovery Framework, the program focuses on flood mitigation.
During this meeting, it was agreed that the three most affected regions of the 23 Louisiana watersheds will take a regional rather than local approach for the first time to reduce risk from flooding. The first coordinated effort is underway in the Vermillion river watershed in Louisiana’s Acadiana region. At the request of state and regional officials, the Economic Recovery Support Function (ERSF) is supporting this effort by developing a model to project the impact of public investments in resilience efforts, particularly in terms of mitigating the economic impact such disasters.
