U.S. Department of Commerce Invests $4.3 Million for Infrastructure to Support Manufacturing Workforce Development and Business Growth in South Dakota

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo announced the Department’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) is investing $4.3 million in the state of South Dakota for infrastructure to support manufacturing workforce development and business growth.

The EDA investments announced today are:

Rosebud Economic Development Corporation, Mission, will receive a $3.5 million grant for construction of a manufacturing workforce training facility on the Rosebud Sioux Reservation. This project is expected to create 10 jobs and generate $2 million in private investment, according to grantee estimates.

The city of Centerville will receive a $725,000 grant to construct a new water tower and support manufacturing business growth. This project will be matched with $725,000 in local funds and is expected to create 30 jobs and generate $1.4 million in private investment, according to grantee estimates

“The Biden-Harris Administration recognizes that infrastructure is key to expanding economic opportunity across the country – including in South Dakota,” said Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo. “These EDA investments will construct new infrastructure and support workforce development to attract manufacturing businesses to the Rosebud Sioux Reservation and Centerville, helping to create high quality, good paying jobs and strengthening the Tribal and regional economies.”

“The U.S. Economic Development Administration works closely with local and Tribal communities to support place-based economic development,” said Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy and External Affairs, performing the non-exclusive functions and duties of the Assistant Secretary for Economic Development Cristina Killingsworth. “These projects will expand the opportunities for manufacturing businesses on the Rosebud Sioux Reservation and in Centerville, spurring private investment and diversifying the local economies.”

The Rosebud Economic Development Corporation project was made possible by the regional planning efforts led by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe and the Centerville project was made possible by the regional planning efforts led by the South Eastern Council of Governments (SECOG). EDA funds Rosebud Sioux Tribe and SECOG to bring together the public and private sectors to create an economic development roadmap to strengthen the regional economy, support private capital investment and create jobs.

These projects are funded under the Disaster Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2023, which provided EDA with $483 million in additional Economic Adjustment Assistance (EAA) Program funds for disaster relief and recovery for areas that received a major disaster declaration under the Robert T. Stafford Act as a result of Hurricanes Ian and Fiona, wildfires, flooding, and other natural disasters occurring in calendar years 2021 and 2022.
