The District of Columbia is home to many national organizations that contribute to economic success in areas across the country, including the International Economic Development Council (IEDC). IEDC is a non-profit, non-partisan membership organization serving economic developers.
As part of EDA’s economic recovery assistance efforts in FY 2017 for communities impacted by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria, EDA provided three grants, totaling $650,000, from the EDA Austin, Philadelphia and Atlanta Regional Offices to IEDC to support the coordination and development of a Volunteer Assistance Program for Hurricane Impacted Communities. These investments focused on quickly assessing economic recovery needs of the disaster impacted communities in Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and deploying experienced recovery and resiliency volunteers to affected communities. The program helped economic developers, communities and regional governments locate and access necessary resources, as well as build capacity to maintain the momentum required for long-term disaster recovery.
