U.S. Department of Commerce Invests $1.5 Million in American Rescue Plan Funds to Construct Surgical Center for Special Needs Patients in San Antonio, Texas

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina M. Raimondo announced the Department’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) is awarding a $1.5 million grant to the Multi-Assistance Center at Morgan’s Wonderland, San Antonio, Texas, to construct an Ambulatory Surgical Center. This grant is funded by the American Rescue Plan.

The new surgical center will serve the underserved special needs population and create jobs in the region’s healthcare sector. The EDA investment will be matched with $2.2 million in local funds and is expected to create 630 jobs and generate $30 million in private investment, according to grantee estimates.

“President Biden’s American Rescue Plan offers direct relief to communities to build a better America from the coronavirus pandemic,” said Secretary of Commerce Gina M. Raimondo. “This EDA investment will provide necessary healthcare to a vulnerable population, while creating jobs and a stronger regional economy.”

“The Economic Development Administration is pleased to support the city of San Antonio as it seeks to improve the area’s healthcare needs and economic opportunities,” said Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development Alejandra Y. Castillo. “Importantly, this new facility will advance equity by serving the underserved special needs community through increased employment opportunities and access to healthcare.”

“Thank you to the Economic Development Administration for this grant that will build a Multi-Assistance Center, including an Ambulatory Surgical Center, at Morgan’s Wonderland in San Antonio,” said Governor Greg Abbott. “On top of the hundreds of jobs and millions in private investment it will bring to Bexar County, this new center will improve the lives of countless of Texans.”

This project is funded under EDA’s American Rescue Plan Economic Adjustment Assistance program, which makes $500 million in Economic Adjustment Assistance grants available to American communities. The Economic Adjustment Assistance program is EDA’s most flexible program, and grants made under this program will help hundreds of communities across the nation plan, build, innovate, and put people back to work through construction or non-construction projects designed to meet local needs.
