The Magic City Data Collective (MCDC), which is being scaled from a successful one-year pilot, is a public-private partnership led by The University of Alabama at Birmingham to create a diverse pipeline of students who are uniquely qualified for and excited about jobs in the data science industry. MCDC brings together students and data professionals in project teams to provide analysis that Birmingham leaders and small businesses need to make good decisions. By working in multi-faceted teams on complex, client-facing projects, students gain the skills and experience they need to successfully move into in-demand roles in Birmingham’s rapidly growing health technology industry and remedy local workforce shortages. Students will complete one semester of data analysis coursework and earn two microcredentials. During the second semester of their fellowship, students will be assigned to multi-tiered and diverse data analysis teams where they will work with other students and data industry professionals to complete a data project for a local small business.
