EDA announced 17 investments from August 22 – August 29, 2024, totaling $7,840,579 which is matched by $3,228,392 in local investments. These investments include the following:

  1. $1,112,000 in three Economic Adjustment Assistance-2023 Disaster Supplemental projects to help regions that are experiencing severe economic distress or other economic hardship resulting from Hurricanes Ian and Fiona, wildfires, flooding, and other natural disasters occurring in calendar years 2021 and 2022.
  2. $300,000 in two Planning and Local Technical Assistance projects to strengthen the capacity of local or state organizations and institutions to undertake and promote effective economic development programs.
  3. $4,622,351 in three Public Works projects to help communities revitalize, expand, and upgrade their physical infrastructure, and to help create and/or save 210 jobs and leverage $37 million in private investments.
  4. $248,000 in one Economic Adjustment Assistance-Assistance to Coal Communities (ACC) initiative project to assist communities severely impacted by the declining use of coal. ACC projects support economic diversification, job creation, capital investment, workforce development, and re-employment opportunities.
  5. $858,228 in four Economic Adjustment Assistance projects to help communities design and implement strategies to adjust or bring about change to their economy in response to structural damage to their underlying economic base.
  6. $700,000 in four Partnership Planning projects to support the development and implementation of the Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy process.

 

  •  $1,112,000 in three 2023 Disaster Supplemental projects, matched by $278,000 in local investments, as follows: 
    • $392,000 to the Greater Nashville Regional Council, Nashville/Davidson County, TN, to support hiring disaster recovery personnel to help implement tornadic damage recovery and economic development efforts for nine Tennessee counties in Nashville. The project will employ a new full-time Disaster Recovery Coordinator and a part-time community planner to further support the long-term disaster recovery needs of the communities. The project will boost economic resiliency, strengthen the regional economy, and support economic growth throughout the region.
    • $400,000 to the Bronx Economic Development Corporation, Borough of Bronx/Bronx County, NY, to support the development and implementation of a Shared Prosperity and Just Transition Plan to serve as the Bronx's Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS). The CEDS process is designed to bring together the public and private sectors in the creation of an economic development roadmap to diversify and strengthen the regional economy.
    • $320,000 to the Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission, Saco/York County, ME, to support developing an Energy Resiliency Plan for the region, which comprises the counties of York and southern Oxford. The Energy Resiliency Plan is designed to bring together the public and private sectors to develop strategies that can be implemented at the local level to strengthen the grid resulting in a more resilient economy. The project will help build a reliable access to vital resources to support regional resiliency after future natural disasters and provide long-term sustainable economic growth.
  • $300,000 in two Planning and Local Technical Assistance projects, matched by $50,000 in local investments, as follows:
    • $50,000 to the George Washington Regional Commission, Fredericksburg, VA, to support the development and implementation of a comprehensive economic development strategy (CEDS) for the region served by the George Washington Regional Commission, which comprises the independent city of Fredericksburg and the counties of Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania, and Stafford. The CEDS process is designed to bring together the public and private sectors in the creation of an counties economic development roadmap to diversify and strengthen the regional economy.
    • $250,000 to Yakama Forest Products, White Swan/Yakima County, WA, to support conducting a feasibility assessment to produce an actionable roadmap to finance and implement a Mill Modernization and Improved Forest Management Plan. The project will assist with the rebuilding of communities throughout the region, which will lay the groundwork for long-term economic vitality and provide long-term sustainable economic growth.
  • $4,622,351 in three Public Works projects, matched by $1,499,964 in local investments, as follows:
    • $459,168 to the Tidewater Electrical Industry Joint Apprenticeship and Training Trust Fund, Norfolk, VA, to make training center renovations to an existing building in Norfolk, Virginia. The project work includes the construction of four classrooms, a laboratory and associated spaces. The project will serve as a catalyst for unprecedented regional economic growth, which will bolster job creation and advance economic resiliency throughout the region.
    • $1,150,000 to the Cuero Chamber of Commerce, Agriculture and Visitor’s Bureau, Cuero/DeWitt County, TX, to make renovations to an existing building in Cuero, Texas. The renovations include repairs and restoration to return the building facade to its original condition. The new visitors center will have an information desk, brochure kiosk and merchandise display as well as public restrooms. Also, the upgrades will provide an event space for conferences, trainings and gatherings, in addition to meeting rooms, staff offices, a break room, storage and copy room. The grantee estimates that this investment will create and/or save 105 jobs and leverage $25 million in private investment.
    • $3,013,183 to the North Iowa Area Community College, Mason City/Cerro Gordo County, IA, to construct a new continuing education training center. The center will strengthen the regional workforce in the healthcare, construction, and manufacturing industries. The continuing education training will assist high school students and community members by connecting them with local employers, which will help to slow the outmigration of workers in the region. The grantee estimates that this investment will create and/or save 105 jobs and leverage $12 million in private investment.
  • $248,000 in one Assistance to Coal Communities project, matched by $62,000 in local investments, as follows:
    • $248,000 to the Town of Springerville, Springerville/Apache County, AZ, to support conducting a financial feasibility study and developing engineering design and environmental documents for a future industrial park in Apache County, Arizona. Northern Arizona University will assist the Town with creating the feasibility and economic impact studies, and market plan to help attract new businesses and innovative industries to the area. The project will help the town's economy become more resilient and diversified amidst imminent coal plant closures, which will create jobs and stabilize the regional economy.
  • $858,228 in four Economic Adjustment Assistance projects, matched by $638,428 in local investments, as follows:
    • $219,800 to the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe, Nixon/Washoe County, NV, to support completing the design and engineering of the Wadsworth Multi-Purpose Cultural and Wellness Center on the Pyramid Lake Paiute Reservation. The Center is a 16,455 square feet public facility that will serve as a space for education, jobs and skills training, Native cultural and prayer meetings, and recreational activities for the Reservation. The new Center will support workforce development and stabilize the regional economy.
    • $70,000 to the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC), Philadelphia/Philadelphia County, PA, to support the update and continued implementation of a Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) for the region served by the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC). The CEDS process is designed to bring together the public and private sectors in the creation of an economic development roadmap to diversify and strengthen the regional economy.
    • $230,342 to the Mansmann Foundation, Pittsburgh/Allegheny County, PA, to support developing a web-based program to expand access to post startup, long-term peer-to-peer learning, and virtual small business growth in Western Pennsylvania. Through this Mobile App, the peer learning model and competency-based curriculum will reach more rural, minority, and women-owned businesses across Pennsylvania. The program will help attract new businesses and help generate an environment that can serve as a catalyst for unprecedented regional economic growth.
    • $338,086 to the Roanoke-Blacksburg Innovation Network, Blacksburg/Montgomery County, VA, to support implementing the Catalyzing Entrepreneur Impact and Support project, to help be a guide and facilitator for innovation in the Roanoke-New River Valley area and beyond. The project will assist early-stage startups seeking crucial guidance before entering formal accelerator programs by offering mentoring sessions and feedback and roundtable events in collaboration with local and statewide partners. The project will help enhance future economic sustainability, strengthen the regional economy, and bolster economic resiliency throughout the region.
  • $700,000 in four Partnership Planning projects, matched by $700,000 in local investments, as follows:
    • $70,000 to the Commonwealth Regional Council, Keysville/Charlotte County, VA, to support the continued development and implementation of a comprehensive economic development strategy (CEDS) for the region, which comprises the counties of Amelia, Buckingham, Charlotte, Cumberland, Lunenberg, Nottoway, and Prince Edward. The CEDS process is designed to bring together the public and private sectors in the creation of an economic development roadmap to diversify and strengthen the regional economy.
    • $210,000 to the Western Connecticut Council of Governments, Sandy Hook/Fairfield County, CT, to support the continued development and implementation of a comprehensive economic development strategy (CEDS) in the region served by the Western Connecticut Council of Governments, which comprises the municipalities of Bethel, Bridgewater, Brookfield, Danbury, Darien, Greenwich, New Canaan, New Fairfield, New Milford, Newton, Norwalk, Redding, Ridgefield, Sherman, Stamford, Weston, Westport, and Wilton. The CEDS process is designed to bring together the public and private sectors in the creation of an economic development roadmap to diversify and strengthen the regional economy.
    • $210,000 to Barnstable County, Barnstable/Barnstable County, MA, to support the development and implementation of a Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) for the region served by Barnstable County, Cape Cod Commission Economic Development District. The CEDS process is designed to bring together the public and private sectors in the creation of an economic development roadmap to diversify and strengthen the regional economy.
    • $210,000 to the Strafford Regional Planning Commission, Rochester/Strafford County, NH, to support the development and implementation of a comprehensive economic development strategy (CEDS) for the region served by the Strafford Regional Planning Commission, which comprises thirteen municipalities in Strafford County (Barrington, Dover, Durham, Farmington, Lee, Madbury, Middleton, Milton, New Durham, Rochester, Rollinsford, Somersworth, Strafford) and two adjacent municipalities in Carroll County (Brookfield, Wakefield) for a total of fifteen municipalities. The CEDS process is designed to bring together the public and private sectors in the creation of an economic development roadmap to diversify and strengthen the regional economy.
